Grassroot Advocates

Our Grassroot Advocates :

Grassroot Advocacy is a form of advocacy which originates among concerned citizens, rather than being orchestrated by organizations or companies. Advocacy is the art of mobilizing individuals to spark changes in program and policies at the local, state and national levels. And who can be better grassroot advocates than children? Liver Foundation, West Bengal has taken the initiative of having grassroot advocates in different districts of Bengal. The WHO definition of "health" says "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease". It is evident these days that social well-being and taking time out for social welfare from one’s busy schedule are much appreciated. And since Liver Foundation aims to enhance the quality of life and try to reduce the burden of liver disease in India through prevention, education, advocacy, improved care and promotion of concepts in public health, so social involvement is something we sincerely believe in. We have already selected 10 school students each from Birbhum and Purulia district. Inaugural programmes were held on 25th March & 31st March, 2012 at Purulia and Birbhum district. These students already have a mindset of helping the distressed; they have been given a platform by Liver Foundation to come in the aid of the distressed. The students were selected by the respective school authorities and the selected students were presented with a memento and Rs. 500 as scholarship. The emolument for this scholarship is fixed at Rs 500 per month for three years for being a "grassroot advocate" working in aid with Liver Foundation, West Bengal. The students will be a part of advocacy training without hampering their school schedule. We pledge to surge ahead with the philosophy of welfare and school students would be the best advocates in bringing about certain awareness in public health. They will also attend awareness programmes conducted by LFWB. Some steps to effective advocacy followed by us are :

  • Building the volunteer network

  • Organising advocacy around both short and long term goals

  • "Targets" of advocacy efforts are to be located

  • And finally the tactics and tools to bring about the change or influencing the targets through campaigning, media exposure, public education and other ways has to be worked upon.

Such endeavor of making Grassroot Advocates have already been extended in Murshidabad and Nadia District also.
